Tigers, Muses & Jasmine - The Wild Heroines of Weimar Berlin
BackMicaela Leon & Paul Trueblood, piano In her musical portrayal of eight of the most notorious female trendsetters of Weimar Berlin in the 1920's, the German actress and singer Micaela Leon has been earning raves. In a show that "uncannily conjures the political and social instability of the Weimar Republic" (Jewish Week), Leon has been hailed as "confident and fascinating" (Lively Arts), "stunning and amazing" (Cabaret Hotline) and possessed of "great style in a truly compelling performance" (Cabaret Scenes). Cabaret Hotline calls this "a must-see for cabaret enthusiasts." "Tigers, Muses & Jasmine" intersperses songs by Friedrich Hollaender, Mischa Spoliansky, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill with the words, ideas and signature gestures of a remarkable rogues gallery of eight female actress-singers, dancers, a journalist and a politician. The show not only celebrates the avant-garde derring-do of these free spirits, it dramatizes the brewing Nazi storm on the horizon as it grows increasingly menacing. The eight women portrayed -- who traded in the scandal, rebellion and sense of experimentation that swelled in Berlin between the two world wars -- are Marlene Dietrich, Anita Berber, Valeska Gert, Rosa Luxemburg, Blandine Ebinger, Ruth Landshoff, Gabrielle Tergit and Claire Waldoff. Written and performed by Leon, directed by Lina Koutrakos, and with music direction by Paul Trueblood -- a noted expert in the music of this era who collaborated with original "Weimar girl," Greta Keller, as well as Marianne Faithful on her "20th Century Blues" album -- "Tigers, Muses & Jasmine" is the perfect antidote to the blandness of so much of our contemporary theatre. Not only that, and in the opinion of New York Press "there's nothing like seeing what the Nazis considered depraved!"
